Statins and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
I have identified in “Vitamin D and Cholesterol” an association between chronic respiratory disease and subsequent coronary heart disease, suggesting that the respiratory tract might be the way of entry of microbes causing coronary heart disease (for example Chlamydia pneumoniae). I have also identified that the sun, mediated by vitamin D is of benefit in protection against the detrimental effects of smoking and in particular, the development of lung cancer. Also that the outcome of lung cancer is better if diagnosis and treatment are in the summer rather than in the winter, and also improved by concurrent oral vitamin D supplement. Finnally I idenified the similarities of benefits of

This is an important review article which provides more evidence of the association between chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and heart disease, linked to smoking status and also categorising patients with chronic obstructive lung disease on the basis of FEV1. This is the proportion of forced expiratory volume that can be forcibly expired in one second. It is normally greater than 90%, but reduces in COPD, chronic bronchitis and asthma.
